Google Cloud Persistent Disk : Important Concepts

Please remember following important points for the Google cloud Persistent Disk :

• It is a Network Based Storage.
• You can attach this to one or more VMs
• It is a good idea to host it outside the VM hosts (external). In case physical hosts goes down, it is still available to use.
• There are two types of PDs Magnetic (This is the default one) or SSD (It is good for High performance).
• If you attach PDs to single VM than you can use it as a read-write mode.
• If you attach single PD to multiple VM than, it can be used read-only mode.
• You can attache multiple disks to a single VM, where few of them can be in read only modes and other can be in read-write mode.
• You can attach upto 16 PDs to a VM and total storage can be upto 10TB
• Data stored in PDs are replicated for resiliency .

Local SSD storage v/s Network Based Persistent Storage

• If you need extreme low latency, you can use local storage to compute engine, which also provides high I/O and throughput.
• Local storage are good for High performance Database and local storage.
• For Local Store there is no resiliency because data is local to that instance. Hence, you should configure your own replication and backups.
• If VMs are migrated from one physical hosts to another physical hosts than data local storage will also be migrated (Important concepts for Google Cloud Certification)
