Important Point about Google Compute Instance Launch

When you launch a new VM instance in Google Cloud

  • If you create a firewall rule without specifying any particular VM instance than it will be applied to all the instances in a network.
  • If you do not specify which network this firewall rule should be applied that, it will be applied to default network.
  • If you do not specify source ip than all the IPs are allowed to reach the instance.
  • As soon as you deploy the VM, your billing will start.
  • By default whenever you delete the VM instance, attached Persistent Disks will also be deleted.

Google Cloud Networks and Firewalls Understanding

You have created virtual machines in the Google Cloud using compute engine. Now the important thing is how they can communicate with the external world? Virtual machines can communicate with external world using networks.

Compute Engine Network:

  • You have to create network so that VM instances can communicate with external world.
  • Network is required to communicate with the persistent disks as well , because they are hosted external to the VM instance.
  • VM Instances provides bandwidth based on CPU core. It means, if your VM instance has more cores than it will be having more bandwidth.
  • Currently bandwidth per core is 2 GB/S.
  • In a Project you can create multiple networks. Each network can have multiple VMs. However, each VM can be attached to only one network (It means VM are single Homed)
  • If you want to have multi-homed VM instances, you can get it using IP forwarding.

Compute Engine Network Firewall : 
  • Firewall is integrated with the compute engine network.
  • There are some default rules which allows small traffic to reach VM instance.
  • Like you can have any two instances in network can communicate with each other.
  • ICMP, RDP and SSH protocol are supported so that any source from external network can reach to the instance.
  • If you want any other traffic to reach your instance, you have to explicitly define the rules.
  • No ingress HTTP traffic is allowed to reach the instance by default.
  • You can configure that firewall rules can be applied to single VM in a network or all the VMs in a network.
  • Firewall can filter only ingress traffic. 
  • All the outgoing traffic should be filtered using route table.

Google Cloud Persistent Disk : Important Concepts

Please remember following important points for the Google cloud Persistent Disk :

  • It is a Network Based Storage.
  • You can attach this to one or more VMs
  • It is a good idea to host it outside the VM hosts (external). In case physical hosts goes down, it is still available to use.
  • There are two types of PDs Magnetic (This is the default one) or SSD (It is good for High performance).
  • If you attach PDs to single VM than you can use it as a read-write mode.
  • If you attach single PD to multiple VM than, it can be used read-only mode.
  • You can attache multiple disks to a single VM, where few of them can be in read only modes and other can be in read-write mode.
  • You can attach upto 16 PDs to a VM and total storage can be upto 10TB
  • Data stored in PDs are replicated for resiliency .
Local SSD storage v/s Network Based Persistent Storage
  • If you need extreme low latency, you can use local storage to compute engine, which also provides high I/O and throughput.
  • Local storage are good for High performance Database and local storage.
  • For Local Store there is no resiliency because data is local to that instance. Hence, you should configure your own replication and backups.
  • If VMs are migrated from one physical hosts to another physical hosts than data local storage will also be migrated (Important concepts for Google Cloud Certification)
